K-State Football: A Scratching-the-Surface Preview for 2011

12 Jul

The Wildcats will take to the field - or, more specifically, the AstroTurf GameDay Grass 3D60H - in front of fans on Sept. 3 for the first game of the 2011 season.

K-State announced today that the first two football games of the 2011 season, against Eastern Kentucky and Kent State, respectively, will be night games, with 6 p.m. start times. The Sept. 3 contest with Eastern Kentucky will serve as the setting for the third-annual K-State Family Reunion, which was attended by 51,000-plus last season. The Sept. 17 game against Eastern Kentucky will be University Family and Band Day.

Several stadium improvements will be debuted this season, including the addition of View Level restroom facilities (a $2 million undertaking) and a new field surface (a $600,000 project).

Facility updates and events aside, this season’s schedule raises several interesting questions for the Kansas State football team.

It will be interesting to see how the team deals with the two-week recess in between its first two non-conference games. After that bye, it won’t have another break for more than a week until after the Nov. 19 game at Texas.

Also, after the departure of Nebraska and Colorado from the Big 12, the Wildcats will face a round-robin schedule, playing all other nine teams in the Big 12 during the regular season. This year, that includes away games against Texas Tech, Kansas, Oklahoma State and Texas. Kansas State will have the home field advantage against opponents Baylor, Missouri, Texas A&M, Oklahoma and Iowa State. It will be a grueling road, but given the possibility of playing some of those latter teams on the road instead of in the friendly confines of Bill Snyder Family Stadium, this is much better than it could be.
